Seeking alternative options for pastoral development in Tanzania

2007-11-01

In the Ngorongoro District in Northern Tanzania the Ereto Ngorongoro Pastoralist Project has been active for 9 years and is in the process of phasing out. Ereto has made significant contributions to pastoral development and poverty reduction in the District and is providing important input to a policy dialogue process on pastoral development in the region.

Nordeco is assisting Ereto in the phase out process up to mid 2009 where the focus is on creating further sustainability at the community level of the various interventions. Amongst others, community based organisations are supported in order to take on responsibilities for continuing support to pastoral development in the area and for linking to pastoral civil society. Support through non-government channels to pastoral development is becoming an increasingly important avenue for support to pastoralists in Tanzania.
