National Forest Programme in Cambodia

2009-04-30

According to FAO, Cambodia lost 29% of its primary forests between 2000 and 2005 and the current primary forest cover stands at 322,000 hectares. Illegal logging, combined with rapid development, is blamed for much of Cambodia's forest loss. Nordeco is supporting Cambodia's Forest Administration in formulating the strategic framework document for a National Forest Programme (2010-2030). The document provides strategic directions on issues such as Forest Demarcation and Classification, National Forest Management and Conservation, Decentralised (Including Community) Forestry, Forest Law Enforcement and Governance, Capacity Building and Research, and Sustainable Financing of the Forests. The new forest programme strategy will ensure compatibility with overall socio-economic and environmental goals, as expressed in various government plans and international obligations.
