Indonesia: socio-economic strategy for community partnerships in the Harapan rainforest

2010-12-23

As part of the Danish Fast Start funding on Climate Change, the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs are planning to support the conservation of part of the lowland rainforest on Sumatra, Indonesia. The lowland rainforest on Sumatra is disappearing at rapid speed and the 100.000 ha forest in Harapan is one of the few remaining lowland forest areas on Sumatra. Although the forest is largely secondary and in places rather degraded, it is still home to key animal and plant species and local communities including indigenous peoples derive their livelihood from the forest. The Harapan Rainforest will be protected for conservation, sustainable use of forest products, and contribution to carbon storage. Ecosystem restoration and collaboration with communities will promoted. Nordeco was hired during November and December to develop the socio-economic strategy for community partnerships and for addressing land use conflicts in and around the Harapan rainforest.
