Food Security in Liberia

2007-09-12

A recent study found that the Liberian population is still highly affected by the consequences of the 14 year civil war that left the country with a destroyed infrastructure, a devastated economy and an impoverished, conflict-stricken population.

More than 85% of households across the country have been displaced at least once since 1989 due to the fighting and looting. Most households returned to their home region between 2003 and 2004, but in some provinces in the north-west, return migration is still ongoing. These areas have been highly affected during the last years of the civil strife; therefore families have to start from scratch to rebuild their livelihoods.

Nordeco is part of a multiparty, UN/World Bank team to assist the government of Liberia prepare a food security programme for small holder farmers, many of whom are young people or children, orphaned during the recent civil war. Specifically Nordeco will assist the Ministry of Agriculture prepare an implementation plan for their part of the food security plan. The main element of this plan will be the creation of a community-based extension system with attached capacity-building institutions.
