Climate mitigation through improved livelihoods
2008-04-24Nordeco has started collaboration with the Danish organic dairy Oellingegaard, and CEDAC a strong Cambodian NGO.
In Eastern Cambodia 800 farming households will be supported in changing their low-productive, chemical-based farming. This will improve their livelihoods through well-proven approaches, developed and applied by CEDAC. It will also reduce their use of CO2-intensive inputs and actually store carbon in their soils, though use of local, organic fertilizers. Useful trees will be planted, fuel-efficient stoves will be installed and other methods of benefit to the climate will be used. A main one among them is the System of Rice Intensification (SRI), which reduces Methane emissions, while increasing yields.
Nordeco will supervise the work and develop methods for local monitoring of the climate benefits. We will also learn from the project for possible replication in other areas, with other socially responsible companies.
The project has been described in an interview with the Chairman of the Oellingegaard board and Nordeco, on Danish Public Radio (in Danish).
