Mr. Rio is an Environment- and Natural Resource Economist with broad experience in household- and institutional economics, and with environmental assessment and evaluation. He has since 1997 been working with rural development and natural resources, environment and agriculture/forestry in the tropics. His key qualifications include:

- small-scale farming

- indigenous peoples issues
- environmental impact assessments
- project and programme evaluation
He has extensive experience with participation in and supervision of development studies including design, implementation and evaluation. Utilisation of participatory design and implementation tools, including training and supervision. Extensive knowledge of Indonesian environmental issues including forestry and shifting agriculture, and broad scale environmental issues in East Timor.
Broad experience with a wide range of PEA/PRA techniques including institutional mapping, trend analysis, stakeholder evaluation etc. Have worked with assessments, background studies, as a member of interdisciplinary teams and headed projects, teams and meetings from local level to local governmental level. Working experiences from Afghanistan, China, East Timor, Indonesia, Philippines, and Tanzania.
