Ecosystem management
Nordeco has broad experiences in diverse aspects of management of several key ecosystems. We always stress the fundamental roles to be played by local communities, frequently including indigenous peoples in any sustainable management, including the sustainable management of biodiversity resources. We have developed methods, now applied widely, for participatory monitoring of the results of such management.
Sustainable forest management
Nordeco has considerable experience in sustainable forest management activities, where the livelihoods of local people are strongly considered. As a special field we have strong experiences and research background in management of peat swamp forests, also from a climate mitigation perspective.
Wise wetlands management
We have worked on wetlands management in several countries, and have contributed significantly to the documentation of the importance of mangrove forests as protection against Tsunamis and hurricanes.
Costal zone management
Currently Nordeco is supporting the Government of Tamil Nadu State in India to improve its planning for and management of coastal resources and previously we have worked on this issue in Cambodia and Mozambique. We assisted the World Bank and the Government of the Philippines in the production of the Philippines Environment Monitor on coastal and marine resources management.
Grassland management
Nordeco has over a decade provided key inputs to the support to pastoralists in Tanzania and is currently involved in grassland management efforts in Northern China.
Conservation of protected areas
As a method cutting across ecosystems, we have substantial experience in management of protected or conservation areas in countries as diverse as Chile, Nicaragua, Russia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, China, Bhutan, Lao PDR, Philippines, Vietnam and Tanzania.
